Unión Deportiva Ibiza has started its preseason with a win. Two second-half goals by Sergio Cirio were enough to beat Sant Rafel at the Municipal de sa Creu stadium. The Catalan striker first rounded off a nice piece of play created by Pep Caballé who put a sublime pass through to Walter who then set up Cirio for the expertly taken opener.
The goal came on 72 minutes. Six minutes later, a penalty was awarded after Walter was brought down in the box. The experienced striker produced a clinical finish to decide the friendly encounter which Ibiza dominated in terms of ball possession for the most part of the match.
Cirio’s goals were the highlights of a match which had a typical first preseason friendly feel to it where the physical freshness was lacking after a tough couple of weeks of training. The first half consequently did not see too many end to end chances being produced on either side. Sant Rafel did well to keep the scores level until halftime, which was called after a short drinks break due to the stifling heat. After the break, the team from Sant Rafel – today playing in a yellow training jersey – started to feel the physical strain and Ibiza began to take the upper hand.
Both squads consisted of several players who will play the majority of the season in the Third Division, unless Pablo Alfaro requires these to step up for first team duties to cover for possible injuries. Positive signs were noted from all of these players in today’s match which leaves a sense of optimism going forward.
With the certainty of having gotten preseason off to a winning start, Ibiza’s players and coaching staff head to Dénia tomorrow (from where they will travel by bus to the Escuela Cracks, their preseason base camp), exactly two weeks after the summer training regime kicked off.
