Spending a mere five minutes with Pep Caballé is enough to realise that he has boiling blood running through his veins. The new midfielder of Unión Deportiva Ibiza is a unique character. On and off the pitch. His teammates already had the opportunity to witness his vigorous style of play, both with and without the ball, in the training sessions held so far this summer. Given his experience and knowledge of Second Division B football, Caballé will be called upon to be one of the leaders in the sky blue dressing room.
“We were seeking a player with character and intensity to improve our group and that’s precisely what Pep gives us. His biggest characteristic is his versatility. He can play through the middle or and the wing. That gives the manager different options to choose from in specific match scenarios”, said Fernando Soriano during the official presentation of the footballer which was held at midday today at the OD Ocean Drive Hotel. The sporting director of Ibiza pointed out that Caballé’s experience includes having played playoff promotion matches in recent years during his time at Unió Esportiva Cornellà. “We wanted to bring in someone who could apply this type of experience in this division.”
Caballé’s time with Cornellà is not what one would call conventional in modern football. A Catalan born in Maó (Menorca) with an English background through his mother’s family, was part of the side from Baix Llobregat for a period of twelve years. Arriving at age seventeen, he left to join Ibiza at 29 years of age. In the last five seasons he played a total of 141 matches in Second Division B, scoring seven goals without being sent off once. After spending half of his career in the same team, he now sets his sights on a new experience on the island of Ibiza.
“This is a very ambitious and exciting project and I didn’t think twice about coming here to Ibiza. I agreed to sign the day after receiving the offer from the club. I am in the place I wanted to be in and I am very happy to have signed for the club. The facilities are very good and the ground is fantastic. I feel extremely comfortable in the dressing room. Both the veteran and younger players, the physios, medical staff and all the employees of the club have helped me to settle in and feel really comfortable. I’m looking forward to competing and getting it all started as soon as possible”, declared Caballé.
“I never give up on a single ball”
Asked about his characteristics, the Catalan player did not waste time to define his style of play: “I am very versatile and work for the team, I don’t give up on a single ball, I have a good technique as I can play with both my left and right foot, and I will give it my absolute all in every match which I think our fans will appreciate. You will see for yourself over the course of this season”.
Caballé even managed to bring out a smile on the attending journalists’ faces when they asked him about his proclaimed versatility and likely position on the pitch: “Attacking midfielder, central midfielder, winger… over the last few seasons I have played as a left winger, using my weaker foot, and as a full back. I probably feel most comfortable as a central midfielder, but I am very versatile and I think that’s an added plus for the manager also in terms of lifting the level of competitiveness in the squad”.
Caballé, a player with his own style and sense of uniqueness, and exciting addition to the sky blue first team.
Welcome to Ibiza, Pep! Best of luck for your new adventure here with us!
