Germán Parreño Boix (Elche, 1993) already knows what it means to hold the sky blue Unión Deportiva Ibiza jersey in his hands. The goalkeeper and Elche native was presented at midday today by Fernando Soriano at the OD Talamanca Hotel, official sponsor of the Ibizan club.
Before explaining to the journalists the reasons behind the signing of Germán, the club’s sporting director took the opportunity to acknowledge the services and performances as well as the commitment and professionalism of former Ibiza gloveman Álex Sánchez who yesterday left the club to sign for Badalona.
“We were looking for a tall goalkeeper with good foot work, which is precisely what Germán’s profile is. He is an experienced player who gives the manager the ability to cover the goalkeeping position in the best way possible”, said Soriano to the attending media representatives at the press conference.
The new signing’s attributes will increase the level of competition for the goalkeeping position where Pablo Alfaro already counts on the qualities of Lucas Anacker, first choice keeper during the second half of last season, and young shot stopper Jorge Chanza who will play this season on loan at San Rafael.
“The project here in Ibiza is ambitious and very professional. It’s exactly what I was looking for. If we want to be a competitive team, we require competition for all positions on the pitch. This will give us that little bit extra going into each game”, explained Germán. The Elche native has made a name for himself as an “eager beaver” who always gave his all for each of the teams he played for. The same level of sacrifice can be expected in order to compete at the maximum level “in a very difficult league where there will be teams of a very high calibre”.
Despite only being 26 years old, an age where many goalkeepers are still looking to develop a sense of maturity in goal, Germán’s CV is already very impressive. His 191 centimetres of goalkeeping pedigree were developed in the youth system of Espanyol. During his time at Sadrià (the colloquial name given to Ciudad Deportiva Dani Jarque), Germán claimed the starting position for the affiliate team of Espanyol, playing 24 matches in Second Division B at only 19 years of age. A reward for his efforts came in 2013, when he made his debut in LaLiga Santander and played 2 matches of the Copa del Rey with the first team of Espanyol.
After his stint with Espanyol, Germán represented other clubs in LaLiga 1|2|3 such as Racing de Santander, Girona as well as his hometown team of Elche. In the last two seasons he played 47 matches in Second Division B for UCAM Murcia. In the 2018/2019 campaign, he faced Ibiza on two occasions and has since slotted into the Ibizan team very nicely by putting his high work rate on display in the first training sessions of the current preseason.
