Ibiza is building its foundations for the future. The sports department and Gonzalo de la Fuente have come to an agreement which sees the player’s contract being extended by one year. In doing so, the Burgos-born central defender remains a Sky Blue for at least another year until 30 June 2021. Gonzalo arrived in Ibiza in 2018 as a summer signing from Racing de Santander with an initial contract of two years. During this time, Gonzalo has become one of the club’s leaders and references both on and off the field.

“I’m extremely delighted to extend my stay here knowing that my performances have been assessed positively, allowing me to continue as a Sky Blue. I’m grateful to the club for giving me the chance to remain a part of this great project. Since I arrived on the island, only good things have happened to me, both privately as well as on the field. I’m fortunate to be sharing a dressing room with complete and utter professionals, both teammates and coaching staff. Each training is a new challenge I embrace, and being 35 years old, I see it as a source of motivation to improve as a player each week. My family and I, we have all come to feel Ibizan by now, we’ve settled in really nicely here in what is our new home”, explains Gonzalo. Amadeo Salvo, Ibiza’s president, highlights the importance of renewing the contract of one of the club’s pillars: “It’s a great satisfaction to know that Gonzalo will stay with us for another year, because he truly embodies the professionalism that Ibiza is all about as a club. He is completely committed to this project and we’re delighted to keep having him with us, because his work ethic will help us to keep growing”.

With his contract extension a done deal, the club’s number 4 will add to his tally of minutes played in a Sky Blue shirt. For now, he has played a total of 50 matches in Segunda B, as one of the regulars in the centre of defence thanks to his experience, grit and aerial dominance. In Ibiza’s three Copa del Rey matches, he also featured as a starter. In addition, he’s enjoyed the privilege of being club captain on several occasions. “Looking back on my time here so far, I only have positive memories. What stands out most of all, is the club’s growth. The club today barely resembles what I first saw when I arrived, so to see this ambition develop and grow continually is fantastic. Seeing how many new club members have signed up this season filling the stands more and more on each occasion is something that really speaks to the potential this club has going forward. I’m extremely proud and happy to continue being a part of this club”, says Gonzalo.
