Pablo Alfaro was spot-on during his post-match press conference after his side’s historic cup victory. “We came here with the objective to get to the next round and that’s exactly what we did”, said Ibiza’s head coach upon conclusion of the Copa Del Rey first round at the Pasarón. In a match that was resumed in the 16th minute, Alfaro’s side was the dominant team from the outset: “Starting in the way we did changes the game as a whole: the opposition had even less time to react than in a normal game of 90 minutes and it allows you to plan your substitutions in a more favourable way, giving players a rest who needed it”.
Alfaro now looks forward, as does his team, to the second round tie which sees Ibiza come up against Albacete Balompié in what shapes up to be a massive occasion for the club and its supporters. “What does this mean for us? Well, as a very young club, it’s huge. For the first time in our history, we’re facing a team from the Second Division at our home ground. We’re very excited about it even though we have virtually no time to prepare the game as we will play on Saturday already”.
