Miguel Núñez reaches 50 matches: a midfielder with strong aerial prowess
August 2018 was an intense month for Miguel Núñez Borreguero (Siruela, Badajoz, 1987). The footballer had just been promoted to Segunda A with Real Mallorca, but he was also about to leave the club. Soon he received a phone call and an offer from Ibiza. “There wasn't a lot of time left before the start of the season. I had a couple of offers, but I found it hard to make a decision, so when Ibiza's offer came along, I quickly had made up my mind. I spoke to the club, asked advice to Chavero, Gonzalo and Fran Grima and from there things proceeded very quickly”.
Five days after the announcement of his signing for the club, he made his debut for his new team at the sports complex of Sevilla Fútbol Club, where Ibiza secured its first victory in the Segunda B division. Winning by one goal, Núñez was the lone scorer for his new team. Last Sunday, he was in the starting eleven for the match at Las Rozas and in doing so, he reached the milestone of playing 50 matches for Ibiza, a period during which he was established himself as a role-model in the squad due to his tireless work-rate in the centre of the pitch, his technical skill and the threat he creates from dead-ball situations. While he considers himself as just another one of the squad players in the side coached by Pablo Alfaro, Núñez knows that he possesses one particular strength, namely that of heading. “I remember the three goals I've scored very well, but the first one in Sevilla is probably the most special, because my family was present to watch the match and I was able to dedicate the goal to them. This season, I hope to contribute just as much as that day, so it's my job to keep working hard”, explained the Extremadura-born player.
If he had to choose one game in particular of the fifty he has played for Ibiza so far, he'd select the match played at Can Misses on April 14 of this year. On that day, Ibiza beat Cartagena with a great performance and a great goal scored by Núñez, again by means of a header: “Last season, there were several special matches, but probably the Cartagena one at Can Misses was the most special in that sense. It was a match we were really up for and we got a win that we really celebrated together with our fans”. In his second season, Núñez wants the Ibiza supporters to have plenty more memorable days to celebrate and remember. For example, in the Copa del Rey, a competition that he knows well. The team's visit to Pontevedra next week promises to be a classic, in the eyes of the midfielder. “Cup ties are always special as it's a knock-out competition. It'll be a very tough game and we'll be up against it away from home. That being said, we're really looking forward to it, with the possibility of bringing a cup tie to Can Misses, possibly against a team from Primera División, pushing us on even more. We're going to do everything we can to make that happen”, says Núñez.
